The Best Leaders Seed, Feed and Weed. Why being a CEO / Leader is like being a gardener.

MrJoe Season 1 Episode 51

Why Being a CEO is Like Being a Gardener – The Three Tools for Great Leadership

In this episode, I break down the three essential things that great CEOs and leaders do – and it’s surprisingly similar to what any good gardener does. It all comes down to seeding, feeding, and weeding.

  • Seeding Ideas: Planting the vision and the strategy.
  • Feeding Initiatives: Supporting and nurturing projects to ensure they thrive.
  • Weeding Inefficiencies: Removing what doesn’t work, whether it’s projects or team fit.

Are you doing all three in your leadership role? This simple framework could be the key to transforming your leadership approach.

So the great CEO's that I work with only really do three things. And they're the same three things that any good gardener does. Let's go over them now. The first thing that they do is they seed ideas. Okay. They plant you ideas. We should be doing this. We need to be doing that. How would it feel if we did this? They're talking about a larger vision and idea strategy, something they're working towards. And they're painting that big idea and giving the people why died working on that, not working on the, how they're working on the vision and the why. The next thing they do then is feeding. They're looking at initiatives, things that are going on and understanding is progress being made in the right direction. Okay, what's happening with this? What's going on with that? And they're saying statements like I've noticed that this is paused. Do you need some more support to help do this or that? How would it feel if we did this, perhaps moving in a slightly different direction. Okay. They're feeding a particular project to see how it's going on. They're not just checking on progress. They're actively supporting the team with. Ideas and approaches to overcome any challenges they're facing. The third thing they do then is weeding. They're removing things that aren't working. Perhaps it's a project that's taking up too much time. It's going in the wrong direction. They're actively stopping initiatives to refocus and to remove onto something that is going to. Improve the results or give them the results that the organization needs equally with weeding. That's moving people around as well. Maybe something's not a right fit in our project. Maybe they're not right fit on the team, but actively looking at the, what the who, and the how and stopping things and redeploying resources, elsewhere. So, if you want to be a great leader, you can learn from this, right. Are you doing all three things? Are you seeding? Are you feeding and are you weeding. Thanks very much for this. I'd love your comments on this approach. Does this resonate? Do you do this? let me know. Thanks for your time. Bye bye.
